Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP)


The purpose of the Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) is to achieve a significant reduction in traffic fatalities and serious injuries on all public roads, including non-State-owned roads(City or County roads). No match of funds is required.

Projects must address one of the Emphasis Areas identified in Florida’s Strategic Highway Safety Plan:

  1. Intersection Crashes
  2. Vulnerable Road Users/Bicycles and Pedestrians
  3. Vulnerable Road Users/Motorcycles
  4. Lane-Departure Crashes

Steps in Developing Proposed HSIP Projects:

  1. Analyze Crash Data
  2. Identify Potential Countermeasures
  3. Perform Benefit-Cost Analysis
  4. Prioritize Projects

Example Projects Include:

  1. Signing and Pavement Marking Improvements
  2. Traffic Signal Improvements
  3. Access Management Changes
  4. Turn Lanes Additions
  5. Safety Edge
  6. Audible Centerlines and Edgelines
  7. Addition of Paved Shoulders
  8. Pedestrian Signals
