Overview
Project Began: September 2009

Project Description

In June 2000, the Metropolitan Transportation Planning Organization (MTPO) amended their Long Range Plan to include the Main Street reconstruction project, reducing Main Street from four lanes to two lanes with a center turn lane between Depot Avenue and NW Eighth Avenue. Construction of this project began September 8th and is expected to take about two years to complete. The project includes:

  • Converting the current four-lane system to a two-lane section with 11-foot travel lanes, a twelve foot center turn lane, five-foot bike lanes and on-street parking

  • Replacing the stormwater system from Depot Avenue to S.R. 26/University Avenue

  • Replacing traffic signals with black mast arm signals

  • Adding countdown type pedestrian signals at signalized crossings

  • Upgrading to wheelchair accessable crossing ramps

  • Improving intersection design for easier pedestrian crossing and traffic calming

  • Replacing broken or missing sidewalk

  • Adding a bus bay in each direction

Work will be completed in phases with portions of the roadway closed to traffic and detours in place. This project has been developed in coordination with the City of Gainesvilles Depot Avenue project and Alachua County's Main Street north project.
