U.S. 19 Resurfacing from State Road 24 in Otter Creek to Southeast Fourth Street in ChieflandAffected Areas
Roads: U.S. 19 Counties: Levy Cities: Chiefland, Otter Creek Overview
Project Began: January 2010 Expected Completion: Fall 2010 Project Description
A Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) project along 11 miles of U.S. 19 in southern Levy County began Monday, Jan. 4. The project includes resurfacing the roadway, adding paved shoulders and extending drainage structures. The project, which begins at Southeast Fourth Street in Chiefland and ends just south of State Road 24 in Otter Creek, is designed to increase the safety and decrease the number of crashes on this stretch of roadway. The improvements include removing the old pavement and replacing it with new asphalt, adding five-foot paved shoulders along the outside lane and two-foot paved shoulders along the inside lane. The extra pavement on the shoulders will provide additional safety in the event a motorist runs off the road. Construction will begin with work on the drainage structures before the repaving begins. The entire project is expected to take about eight months to complete, depending on weather conditions such as rain and cold. During construction, U.S. 19 may be reduced to one lane in either direction. APAC-Southeast, Inc. of Jacksonville, has been hired by the FDOT to complete the $7.3 million project. An average of 3,700 vehicles per day travel this section of roadway, which was last resurfaced in 1971.
