Crescent Beach Bridge Painting on State Road 206Affected Areas
Roads: State Road 206, State Road A1A Counties: St. Johns Cities: Crescent Beach Overview
Project Began: February 2010 Expected Completion: End of 2010 Project Description
A bridge painting project for the Crescent Beach Bridge (Verle Allyn Pope Bridge) on State Road 206 that will require the bridge to be closed and all traffic detoured for 15 days during the 300-day project, which began in early February. This project includes cleaning and painting the steel structure and replacing some of the rivets and bolts. The bridge will be closed and traffic detoured when the contractor must paint portions of the bridge that can only be painted when the bridge is up. The bridge closure will be restricted to a total of 15 of the 300 days and only allowed during the hours of 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. Signs will be in place for two weeks prior to any bridge closure. When the bridge is closed traffic will be rerouted to the Mickler OConnel Bridge on State Road 312. Single lane closures with flaggers directing traffic during the project may be necessary and have no time restrictions. Most of the work will be visible from beneath the bridge by boats traveling through the channel and may require channel restrictions or closures which will be coordinated with the United States Coast Guard. The fishing pier beneath the east end of the bridge will also be closed during construction for safety. Coastal Marine Construction Inc. of Venice, Florida is under contract to FDOT to do the work at a cost of $927,109.95 and should be finished by the end of 2010, barring unforeseen conditions such as bad weather. An open house was held on March 16, from 4 - 7 p.m. at the Crescent Beach Baptist Church, 885 State Road 206 East. Visitors met with project personnel, reviewed plans and received answers to their questions.
