This project will create a one-way pair through downtown Newberry to improve traffic flow and increase roadway capacity. State Road 26 will carry eastbound traffic with two travel lanes, a buffered bicycle lane, on-street parking and sidewalks. Northwest First Avenue will carry westbound traffic with two travel lanes, a buffered bicycle lane, on-street parking, sidewalks and landscaping.
To create the new traffic pattern, Northwest First Avenue will be realigned between Northwest 266th Street and Northwest 260th Street on the west side of downtown. A roundabout will be constructed at the intersection of State Road 26 and County Road 337 (Northwest 266th Street).
On the east side of downtown, Northwest First Avenue will be extended from Northwest 249th Street to Southeast 246th Terrace to connect with State Road 26 and complete the one-way pair.
Additional improvements include reconstruction of nearby side streets, intersection improvements along State Road 45 (U.S. 41/U.S. 27) and upgrades to the stormwater drainage system.
